Today #OMFScienceWednesday post is about why we are so happy to welcome Dr. Jonas Bergquist to our Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Bergquist is an expert in chemistry, neurochemistry, pathology, and precision medicine, with faculty appointments at Uppsala University, Sweden, the University of Utah School of Medicine, and Binzhou Medical University in Yantai, China.
Dr. Bergquist is known for developing tools to discover biomarkers for different diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. We have funded some of his research on ME / CFS, in which he is studying the neuroimmunological aspects of the disease using proteomics and metabolomics (measuring all the proteins and metabolites) in cerebrospinal fluid samples. He is particularly interested in steroids, because of their important role in regulating metabolism and gene expression, and in autoantibodies, because they can help tell us about the activity of the immune system. Dr. Bergquist has already identified some molecular differences between patients and healthy volunteers, and is investigating what these findings can tell us about the mechanisms of ME / CFS.
Learn more about Dr. Bergquist’s ME / CFS research by watching his presentation at our Community Symposium on the Molecular Basis of ME / CFS, held this summer at Stanford University.
